Sadly, the old club mentality of "I'll work while you race; You work while I race" is as dead as a mackeral in most groups. Today's drivers do not want to spend time on a corner or in Registration or staffing the Tech Line or Timing & Scoring. They expect to come to your race and be served, just as at the other businesses they frequent.
We can moan and groan about this situation all night at the bar, but that will not change it. What is required is to seek new ways to put on fun, safe and efficient events for our members to enjoy, without the staff of eager volunteers we used to have, and without doing all of the work yourself.
In 1997, five guys who were (and still are) active as volunteers in one of the largest sports car racing clubs in the midwest decided that the situation called for a commercial event production company. They formed Speed Merchants Ltd, to assist other clubs and organizations in combatting the lack of volunteer labor.
Since then, Speed Merchants Ltd has presented driver schools and on-track days for exotic car dealers, staffed vintage races and set up and run a professional driver school for a major race track. We have the contacts to bring out professional race staff members, racing driving instructors, emergency vehicles, and all the other details needed to make your on-track event a success, while lifting the weight from your back!
Yes, your drivers will pay more to race in an event staffed by Speed Merchants Ltd. But when you build our fees into your race budget, today's drivers accept it as a welcome alternative to being bugged to help put on the race.
